Abstract | The use of biomass burning in agriculture can causes diversified environmental impacts. This method leaves the ground without coverage, increasing the losses of substances by soil erosion necessary for plant nutrition. The sugar-cane crop is one of the most important agricultural activities in Brazil, cultivated since the sixteenth century. The most important sugar-cane products are the ethanol, sugar and electricity, with Sao Paulo State the largest producer. Although the benefits of sugar-cane to the economy, the environmental impacts such as albedo changes, surface and atmospheric radiation budget, are not entirely understood. The present work aims to analyze the albedo changes in the municipality of Araraquara, located in Sao Paulo State, during the 1987 and 2008 period, and to compare these changes with the GOES biomass burned fire product. To esteem the albedo values, the Landsat 5 Thematic Mapper sensor bands in the electromagnetic region of visible, near and mid infrared were used. It was found that 15,000t of sugar-cane straw burned in the study area by the use of fire radiative energy acquired from Wildfire Automated Biomass Burning Algorithm/Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (WFABBA/GOES) fire data. Also, the changes in albedo are related to biomass burning episodes and to changes in land use and land cover, as well the change in vegetation stages. |
